Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) – April 9, 2015 – Conquer Mobile, simulation training specialists, announce the release and general availability of PeriopSim, a new medical simulation training app for OR nurses and surgical techs, who need to learn surgical instrumentation.

PeriopSim is an iPad app for clinicians who need to learn surgical instruments and procedures. PeriopSim enables surgical staff to practice safely before surgery. Using video of real surgeries and voice prompts, users are guided through a surgery and prompted to use the correct tool at every step. Gamification techniques such as scoring and timed challenges motivate learners to practice and hone their skills. It is aimed at both students and experienced perioperative nurses preparing for unfamiliar procedures.

PeriopSim is available as a free preview version on the App Store here: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id960363034&mt=8. It is designed to be purchased by educators, as part of a hospital education program. The preview version includes a basic instrumentation module and a short preview of a hernia surgery module. Additional instrumentation and surgery modules are available for purchase and an extensive library is planned. PeriopSim is also customizable for individual hospitals, educational facilities and medical device companies.

“PeriopSim has the potential to reduce the total cost of orientation of OR staff,” explained Angela Robert, CEO of Conquer Mobile. “It can also reduce stress by allowing surgical staff to refresh and rehearse skills before an unfamiliar procedure.”

PeriopSim has attracted endorsement from surgeons, medical innovators, nurses and educators alike.

“The old mantra of ‘See One, Do One, Teach One’ is no longer desirable or applicable in surgical training,” stated Dr. James Bond, Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Surrey Memorial Hospital and Fraser Health. “One of the biggest advantages of something like PeriopSim is the ability to stop and rewind. You can’t do that in real life.”

Dr. Bond explained, “As a surgeon, I rely on my surgical team being well prepared for every surgery. PeriopSim means clinicians can practice safely before surgery, which means a more efficient surgical team and better patient outcomes.”

“PeriopSim makes it possible for surgical teams to quickly get up to speed with new instruments, technologies and procedures.” commented Dr. Ryan D’Arcy, Head, Health Sciences and Innovation at Fraser Health. “This portable platform application brings faster adoption of innovative surgical techniques to any clinical environment worldwide.”

The product has been developed in close collaboration with medical experts including surgeons, nurses and nurse educators to ensure accuracy and realistic learning outcomes. PeriopSim has been been tested in academic research with neurosurgical residents learning how to perform Burr Hole brain surgery at the annual Dalhousie University ‘Rookie Camp’. Neurosurgery residents used PeriopSim to supplement traditional learning methods. The research study will be published in a paper later this year.

“PeriopSim enabled neurosurgery residents to learn the steps and instruments of the Burr Hole procedure,” commented Dr. David Clarke, Surgeon and Head of Neurosurgery, Dalhousie University/Capital Health. “PeriopSim is valuable for any surgical resident or nurse who needs to prepare for an unfamiliar surgical procedure,” added Clarke.
