In the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage, doctors are miniaturized and injected into a patient’s blood stream where they attempt a tricky surgical procedure. If you’ve ever been to Disney’s Epcot Center in Florida, you may have taken the nauseating thrill ride. That concept is now leaving the realm of science fiction, thanks to Virtual Reality.
Surrey-based medical simulation training specialists Conquer Mobile, based in the Health Tech Innovation Hub across from Surrey Memorial Hospital, made a big impression last year when it unveiled PeriopSim VR, an app that “helps surgical staff to learn instruments and procedures and provides a safe way to practise before surgery.”
“VR has long been seen as an exclusively gaming-focused technology but it is clear that it has a very practical, viable use in medical training,” said Aaron Hilton, executive chairman and co-founder of Conquer Mobile, after the company won $25,000 at the VR Demo Day event at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. last July. An iPad version of PeriopSim VR is available as a free demo via Apple’s app store.
